As you know, you were not the first Guardians. Decades ago, there were five others: Cassidy, Halinor, Yan Lin, Kadma and Nerissa.

The Oracle to W.I.T.C.H. on Nerissa's connection to Kandrakar, K is for Knowledge

They were... C.H.Y.K.N.? I am so glad we're W.I.T.C.H.!

—Hay Lin on the previous Guardians

C.H.Y.K.N. (pronounced "chicken") is a fictional group in the W.I.T.C.H. comics and TV series, who were the Guardians that preceded W.I.T.C.H.

In the comics, the group is not referred to as C.H.Y.K.N. but simply by the group's member's first names.

A young Kadma, Halinor, Cassidy and the elderly Yan Lin

  • Cassidy - Cassidy was the former Guardian of Water. She has russet-orange hair, deep blue eyes and freckles. She received the Heart of Kandrakar after Nerissa went power crazy. She was later killed by Nerissa after refusing to give her the Heart of Kandrakar.[1][2] In the comics, she communicated with Will to give her a spark of the Heart of Kandrakar after Nerissa stole the original one.[3] In TV series, Nerissa brought her back to life as Nerissa wanted power and to get the Hearts of Kandrakar, Zamballa, and Meridian.[4]
  • Halinor - Halinor is the former Guardian of Fire. She is blonde and has blue eyes. In the comics, she is no longer alive during Arc 2: Nerissa's Revenge. However, Halinor left a mysterious diary which mentioned the Star of Cassidy and it's location, which helped the current Guardians.[1] In the TV series, she joined the Council of Kandrakar but Nerissa manipulated her to be under her control.[5]
  • Yan Lin - Yan Lin is Hay Lin's grandmother and the former Guardian of Air. After Cassidy's death, Yan Lin kept the Heart of Kandrakar on Earth until it was time to pass it on to the next generation, after which time she acted as a mentor to the new Guardians. In the TV series, Yan Lin was the only member of C.H.Y.K.N. to resist Nerissa, so instead, Nerissa captured her within The Heart of Meridian and used her Altermere instead to reform the group.[6]
  • Kadma- Kadma is the former Guardian of Earth. In comics, she handed Halinor's diary to Will, saying that her mission was over and didn't want to be connected with Kandrakar or the Guardians anymore. She also revealed that she watched over Will almost all her life.[1] In TV series, Kadma lived on Zamballa as the Queen.[7] She decided to live on Earth after she escaped the Heart of Meridian to live a more 'humble' life.[8]
  • Nerissa - Nerissa is the former Guardian of Quintessence. Nerissa was the first member of the group to carry the Heart of Kandrakar, but it was given to Cassidy after the power of the Heart began to corrupt her.[1] In order to take it back, Nerissa killed her.[2] The Heart was then given to Yan Lin and Nerissa was locked up for her crimes.[1] In comics, she kidnaped Caleb as she knew that he had the Guardians powers within him.[9] She used him to become younger and stronger.[10] Later, Nerissa stole the Heart of Kandrakar from Will[11] and invaded Kandrakar.[12] In the TV series, she wanted to get power to get the hearts of the different realms, so she reformed C.H.Y.K.N.[6] She is the mother of Caleb[13] and she later became very powerful throughout, showing her strength within a majority of Season 2.

Plot[]

TV series[]

They were chosen as Guardians but broke up after Nerissa betrayed her fellow Guardians and killed Cassidy in a struggle for the Heart of Kandrakar[2] approximately 40 years before the start of the series.[4]

When Nerissa returned, during Season 2, she used the emotions and desires that formed chinks in the souls' armor of the other members of C.H.Y.K.N. to gain control of their minds.[4][5][14] Only Yan Lin, whom she imprisoned in the Heart of Meridian, was able to resist.[6]

Previous Guardians of the Veil (minus Nerissa): Kadma, Yan Lin, Cassidy and Halinor.

In the second half of Season 2, Nerissa destroyed her own Knights of Destruction and used the power that she gave them to restore herself and the other members C.H.Y.K.N. to their original Guardian forms and to fuel their powers.[6] After the current Guardians broke her control over them, she absorbed the rest of the old Guardians into the Seal of Nerissa, thus gaining access to all of their elemental powers.[15] After Nerissa was trapped inside Weira's jewel with them, they escaped, along with Elyon and Yan Lin.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The current Guardians make up the acronym "W.I.T.C.H.", which is pronounced as "Witch". The previous Guardians make up the acronym "C.H.Y.K.N.", which is pronounced as "Chicken".
    • Hay Lin came up with the acronym "C.H.K.Y.N." for the group.[2]
  • Nerissa's Guardian outfit is dark green in the comic books, but is purple in the TV series.
  • In the comics, the top part of Kadma's Guardian outfit covers her neck and is wearing a blue sash hanging from her left shoulder all the way behind her right arm. In the TV series, she wears a blue choker instead of the sash.
  • The members of C.H.K.Y.N. used to have a very close relationship, they even refer to each other as sisters.[citation needed]
  • They all knew Principal Knickerbocker when they were young.[citation needed]
  • Halinor's Guardian outfit does not have a left sleeve to it in the comics as it does in the TV series.
  • With the exception of Nerissa and Will, the members of C.H.K.Y.N. have some physical resemblance with the current Guardians:
    • Cassidy is redheaded and has blue eyes like Irma Lair, and both are Guardians of the element of Water.
    • Halinor has blonde hair and blue eyes like Cornelia Hale.
    • Kadma has bluish-black hair, brown eyes and tan skin just like Taranee Cook.
    • Yan Lin is Asian and has bluish-black hair and brown eyes like her granddaughter Hay Lin, obviously because they're related, and they're also Guardians of the element of Air.
  • In TV series, their powers are shown to be stronger and more effective than those of their successors, W.I.T.C.H., having had more training, experience and time to fully master their abilities.
    • Another factor to their superior strength to their successors is that after being repowered, C.H.Y.K.N's powers were fueled by two mystic hearts. And despite Cassidy, Yan Lin and Halinor retiring from being guardians, Kadma and Nerissa continued to use and hone their abilities long after they were disconnected from the Aurameres, further developing their skills and experience.[citation needed]
  • In the Latin American dub of the episode K is for Knowledge, their group name is changed to K.C.H.Y.N. only in the episode name.
