Mareeve is a character introduced in the ninth arc. She is princess to the underwater kingdom of the starfish, hiding from her enemies as a human on land.
Appearance[]
Mareeve has black hair and blue eyes, with the look of a woman in her 20s or 30s despite being centuries old. She possesses a golden star symbol on her forehead, representing her status as princess of the starfish.
In her true Saarineen form, Mareeve looks humanoid, still possessing arms and feet. She wears clothes made of fish scales and seaweed, decorated with shells and starfish. Her hair has more texture and is loose, while the star on her forehead glows brightly when she uses her powers.
In her human form as "Mary", her hair is more blue and straight. She keeps most of it pinned back but uses her bangs to cover her star on her forehead. She changes her clothing to match the era she is in, but in modern day, she favors a long blue dress.
Personality[]
To those who do not know her, she seems like a silent and lonely woman who lives a solemn hermit's life. In actuality, Mareeve is a very friendly person who enjoys having company even from strangers. She is incredibly brave as she can stand up to an army of sharks without backing down, plus being protective of her boyfriend Arthur when he is close to danger.
Truthfully, Mareeve is very homesick for her kingdom, wishing to return to her people but waiting until she has the strength to take back her throne. This leads to her staring out into the ocean for long hours even though people think she is strange.
Plot[]
Mareeve was born to an ocean-dwelling race, the Saarineen, who inspired the legends of sirens. Her father was King Wishtarr, making her a princess, and they ruled areas of the sea with command of starfish. Their subjects were usually peaceful and shy, until the mystical Red Night when they would link their minds and become a powerful force.
When the opposing king Orristur wanted to steal their territories, he invaded their kingdom with his sharks and captured Wishtarr, imprisoning him. He tried to force Mareeve to marry him, but she escaped.
Mareeve fled to land and from there, began hiding among humans using the name “Mary”. Because of her Sarineen heritage, she aged one thousand times slower than humans, thus had to change towns every few decades once people became suspicious of her. She repeated this quest for two centuries, staying near the water and waiting for the Red Night when she could take back her kingdom.
She eventually came to the beachside village of Southgate and made her home on the top of a cliff. She lived there for over twenty-five years, becoming something of an urban legend as the locals – noticing she did not age – began to suspect she was a witch. Particularly, elder woman had a great dislike of her though were accused of being jealous of her beauty. There were many who feared “Mary” and disallowed their children to even approach her cliff out of suspicion. The mailman was usually her only visitor.
Despite all of this, Mareeve did find love and companionship in Arthur, a local human who she told her secrets to and who accepted her exactly as she was.
Eventually, Mareeve decided it was time to leave town once more among all of the spreading rumors and suspicion. This time, however, she planned to bring Arthur with her. On the day before her leaving, she was paid a visit by W.I.T.C.H. who were on vacation to Southgate and heard the rumors, wanting to get to know her. She welcomed them into her home and admit to having been a resident for some time but was no witch. She also mentioned her plan to move away and when Arthur came to meet her, she ran to hug him at the gate. W.I.T.C.H. bid them both farewell.
The following day, Mareeve went swimming in the deepest parts of the coast in her Sarineen form when she was spotted by Irma Lair. Unsure of how the girl could be so deep, she fled back to her house and when W.I.T.C.H. arrived, she asked them if they too were Saarineen. W.I.T.C.H. revealed their true magical nature to her and after listening to their story, Mareeve shared her own, including her wait for the Red Night when she could take back her home. W.I.T.C.H. wished her luck and with Arthur, Mary left her cliffside house.
As it turned out, that very night was the Red Night, with thousands of starfish approaching Southgate beach to find Mareeve. But when she and Arthur went to the beach, they discovered Orristur had also arrived, bringing with him an army of sharks as he had long planned to attack her before she could regain strength. Mareeve was not afraid of his forces but when he threatened Arthur, W.I.T.C.H. arrived to help her battle. They took care of the shark attack and once Mareeve could gather her power from the Red Night, she and Irma controlled a huge wave to wash her enemy back out to sea, finally winning the war for her starfish.
With Orristur gone and the Red Night to empower her, Mareeve was ready to return home to rejoin her father. Arthur insisted on coming with her no matter what. Likewise unwilling to part with him, Mareeve instructed him to inhale her breath and the two shared a long kiss as the water washed them away to her deep-sea kingdom.
It’s unclear what became of them after, but W.I.T.C.H. were optimistic that their love would let them live together happily.
Powers and abilities[]
Not much is shown of Mareeve's basic powers. On the mystic Red Night, she is given great strength enough to command a wave (with Irma's help) that can push back an army of sharks. She also supposedly can allow people to breath underwater by letting them inhale her breath, though it isn't clear how long this effect can last.
